What Are Citation Alerts?

Citation Alerts notify you when a tracked owner's trademark is cited by a USPTO examining attorney as a potential bar to another applicant's registration. This is a unique form of competitive intelligence that shows when your marks (or a competitor's marks) are being used to block other applications.

When You'll Receive This Alert

You'll receive a Citation Alert when:

  • A USPTO examining attorney cites a tracked owner's mark in an Office Action
  • The citation indicates the new application may be confusingly similar to the tracked owner's mark

Why This Alert Matters

  • Brand strength indicator - Frequent citations show your mark has strong protection
  • Potential infringers - See who's trying to register similar marks
  • Competitive landscape - Understand how your marks affect the market
  • Licensing opportunities - Blocked applicants might seek licenses

Subject: Citation Alert: Your Mark Cited Against New Application

Hi Sarah,

A trademark owned by a tracked owner has been cited
by the USPTO as a bar to a new application:

┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ YOUR TRACKED OWNER'S MARK │
│ Owner: Acme Corporation │
│ Mark: ACME BRAND │
│ Reg. Number: 6,123,456 │
│ Status: REGISTERED │
├─────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ BLOCKED APPLICATION │
│ Applicant: XYZ Industries Inc. │
│ Their Mark: ACME PRODUCTS │
│ Serial Number: 98765432 │
│ Office Action: December 3, 2025 │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

The USPTO has indicated potential confusion between
these marks. The applicant must overcome this
citation or the application may be refused.

What Happens After a Citation

When a mark is cited, the new applicant typically has three options:

  1. Argue over - Submit legal arguments that the marks aren't confusingly similar
  2. Amend - Narrow their goods/services to avoid overlap
  3. Abandon - Withdraw the application entirely

If you're the cited mark owner, no action is required—the citation protects your registration.

How to Enable Citation Alerts

  1. Go to Settings → Owner Alert Settings
  2. Toggle Citation Alerts on
  3. Choose delivery: Immediate or Weekly Digest
